Pure metal value at the spot price. When buying, dealers usually pay 90–97% of this (melting and refining costs, margin).

How the gold calculator works

The melt value is weight × fineness × price per gram of fine gold. For example, a 4-gram ring in 585 gold (14 carat) contains 4 × 0.585 = 2.34 grams of pure gold.

You can identify the fineness by the hallmark: 333, 375, 585, 750, 875, 900, 916 or 999. Silver is often stamped 800, 835 or 925. If there is no hallmark, a dealer can test the metal.
